More than 200,000 people attended Mahasatsang with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi- Kerala, where 1,200 young dancers, dressed in traditional off-white sari with bright golden brocade (known as kasavu), performed the Mohiniattam.
The performance has been awarded the world record for Most People Performing a Mohiniattam Dance by the Guinness Book of World Records. The subtle gestures and footwork of the dancers and their depiction of feminine moods and emotions enchanted the onlookers.
A traditional South Indian dance form from Kerala, Mohiniattam comes from the words “Mohini” meaning a women who enchants and “aattam” meaning graceful and sensuous body movements. The elegant swaying and the gentle movements of erect torso from side to side is reminiscent of the swinging of the palm leaves and the gently flowing rivers which abound kerala. The main theme of the dance is love and devotion of God, the purpose being to enchant the mind without enticing the senses.
