Pranayama Count Be it Maharishi Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga, the Eight Limbs of Yoga or Hatha Yogi Swami Svatmarama’s Chaturanga Yoga, asanas have always preceded pranayama. Asanas rid the body of lethargy and infuse it with prana which is the vital energy needed by our physical and subtle layers. The practice of Pranayama then channelizes the prana through the nadis, nourishing the mind and keeping the body alive. Death comes to the physical body when prana leaves the body. ‘Prana’ refers to the universal life force and ‘Ayama’ means to regulate or lengthen. Prana is not to be confused with breath. Prana is the life energy of the breath. The practice of Sudershan Kriya includes yogasanas, nadi shodhana or anulom vilom, pranayama count, bhastrika and then the short kriya. The CD of the Pranayama Count begins with the three stages of Pranayama followed by the count for Bhastrika. For many who’ve done the Happiness Program, the thought of the three-stage Pranayama deters many from practicing the home Kriya. Enjoy the Sudershan Kriya as someone else does the count for you.
